Michel Tremblay is one of the most celebrated and prolific writers in Canadian history. His plays, novels, and short stories have been translated into more than 30 languages and have won numerous awards, including the Governor General's Award, the Prix Goncourt, and the Free Download of Canada. But Tremblay's journey to literary stardom was not always an easy one.
In his new book, Birth of a Bookworm, award-winning author and journalist Brian Busby tells the story of Tremblay's childhood and adolescence, and how he overcame adversity to become one of the most important voices in Canadian literature.
Tremblay was born in Montreal in 1942, the son of working-class parents. His father was a printer, and his mother was a seamstress. Tremblay's family was not wealthy, but they were close-knit and supportive. Tremblay's parents encouraged him to read and write, and he soon developed a passion for literature.
Tremblay's childhood was not without its challenges. He was a shy and introverted child, and he often felt like an outsider. He was also bullied by his peers because of his effeminate mannerisms. However, Tremblay found solace in books. He would spend hours reading in his room, and he would often write stories and plays of his own.
When Tremblay was 14 years old, he wrote his first play, Les Belles-soeurs. The play was a critical and commercial success, and it launched Tremblay's career as a playwright. Tremblay continued to write plays throughout his adolescence, and he soon became one of the most popular playwrights in Quebec.
In 1968, Tremblay published his first novel, C't'à ton tour, Laura Cadieux. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it won the Governor General's Award for Fiction. Tremblay has since published more than 30 novels, plays, and short stories.
Tremblay's work is often characterized by its realism and its exploration of social issues. He is particularly known for his portrayal of working-class life in Quebec. Tremblay's work has been praised for its honesty, its humor, and its compassion.
In Birth of a Bookworm, Busby provides a fascinating and intimate portrait of one of Canada's most celebrated writers. Busby draws on extensive interviews with Tremblay, his family, and his friends to create a vivid and compelling account of Tremblay's life and work.
Birth of a Bookworm is a must-read for fans of Michel Tremblay and for anyone interested in the history of Canadian literature.
