The Early Years

Warren Buffett was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1930. His father was a stockbroker, and Buffett began investing at a young age. He bought his first stock, Cities Service Preferred, at the age of 11, and by the time he was 15, he had saved $5,000.

Buffett attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studied business administration. After graduating in 1956, he moved to New York City to work for Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing. Buffett spent three years working for Graham, and he learned the principles of value investing that would later form the foundation of his own investment philosophy.

The Value Investing Philosophy

Value investing is a strategy that involves buying stocks that are trading below their intrinsic value. Intrinsic value is the estimated value of a company based on its assets, earnings, and other factors. Buffett believes that by buying stocks that are trading below their intrinsic value, investors can achieve superior returns over the long term.

Buffett is a patient investor who is willing to hold stocks for many years. He believes that the stock market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term. In other words, the stock market can be volatile in the short term, but over the long term, stock prices will reflect the underlying value of the companies they represent.

The Berkshire Hathaway Years

In 1965, Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway, a struggling textile company. He immediately began to implement his value investing philosophy, and over the next few decades, Berkshire Hathaway transformed into one of the most successful companies in the world.

Berkshire Hathaway owns a diverse portfolio of businesses, including insurance, railroads, and consumer products. Buffett has a long-term investment horizon, and he is willing to invest in businesses that he believes have a sustainable competitive advantage. He is also a patient investor, and he is willing to hold stocks for many years.

The Investment Principles of Warren Buffett

Over the years, Buffett has developed a set of investment principles that have guided his investment decisions. These principles include:

  • Invest in businesses that you understand. Buffett only invests in businesses that he understands and that have a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Buy stocks that are trading below their intrinsic value. Buffett believes that buying stocks that are trading below their intrinsic value is the key to achieving superior returns over the long term.
  • Be patient. Buffett is a long-term investor who is willing to hold stocks for many years. He believes that the stock market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term.
  • Don't panic. Buffett believes that it is important to stay calm during market downturns. He says, "The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient."
