The Journey and the Message

Coxey's Crusade began in Massillon, Ohio in 1894. From there, the army of unemployed workers, known as the "Commonwealers," marched eastward, gathering support and recruits along the way.

As they marched, the Crusaders proclaimed their message of economic populism. They called for the government to create jobs through a public works program, to institute an income tax, and to end the gold standard.
