Early Life and Education

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a minister, and his mother was a teacher. King attended segregated schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1948. He then went on to attend Morehouse College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1951. King also earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1954 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Boston University in 1955.

Civil Rights Activism

King began his civil rights activism in 1955, when he led the Montgomery bus boycott. The boycott was a success, and it helped to bring about the desegregation of public transportation in Montgomery. King's leadership in the Montgomery bus boycott made him a national figure, and he soon became one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement.

In 1957, King helped to found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The SCLC was a coalition of civil rights organizations that worked to promote nonviolent resistance and to achieve equality and justice for all. King served as the SCLC's president until his assassination in 1968.

King's leadership and nonviolent resistance helped to bring about major changes in the United States. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibited racial discrimination in voting.

Assassination and Legacy

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was shot and killed by James Earl Ray, a white supremacist. King's assassination shocked the nation and the world. He was only 39 years old.

King's legacy continues to inspire people around the world. He is remembered as a symbol of hope and change. His words and actions continue to inspire people to fight for justice and equality.
