The Wrongful Conviction

In 1984, 12-year-old Jennifer Thompson-Cannino was abducted and raped. Two weeks later, Ronald Cotton, a 22-year-old black man, was arrested and charged with the crime. Despite the lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime, Cotton was convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to death.

Cotton spent 11 years on death row, while Thompson-Cannino struggled to rebuild her life. She eventually became an advocate for victims of sexual assault and worked tirelessly to clear Cotton's name.

The Path to Redemption

In 1995, DNA testing exonerated Cotton and he was finally released from prison. Thompson-Cannino and Cotton met for the first time in 1997 and formed a close bond. They have since become outspoken advocates for criminal justice reform and work to prevent wrongful convictions from happening to others.

Picking Cotton is their powerful story of injustice, redemption, and the power of forgiveness. It is a must-read for anyone who cares about justice and the human spirit.
