In the early 1980s, a mysterious new disease began to emerge in the United States. It was a disease that attacked the body's immune system, leaving its victims vulnerable to a wide range of infections. At first, doctors were baffled by the disease, and they struggled to understand how it was spread.

As the number of cases grew, so did the fear and panic. The disease was quickly labeled "gay cancer," and many people believed that it was a punishment for homosexuality. The government was slow to respond to the crisis, and it was not until 1984 that the disease was finally identified as AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

In the early days of AIDS, there was no cure or treatment for the disease. The medical community was struggling to understand how it was spread, and there was a great deal of misinformation about the disease.

In 1987, Randy Shilts published a groundbreaking book about the early days of AIDS. The book, "And The Band Played On," was a gripping narrative that followed the scientists, doctors, and activists who were on the front lines of the fight against AIDS.

"And The Band Played On" was a critical and commercial success. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction, and it was made into a television miniseries in 1993.

The book is a powerful and moving account of one of the most devastating pandemics in history. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the early days of AIDS.
